Cinema Six

Recognizing the film-going needs of Northern Ontario residents, Stinson Theatres opened the Cinema Six in Timmins, Ontario in October of 1988. It was the first multi-screen cinema of its kind in Timmins, having had single and double-screen theatres like the Victory Theatre, the Broadway Theatre, and the Palace Theatre in the past.

There is nothing distinct about the modern style of the theatre, and one could easily compare it to any suburban multiplex found in the late-1980’s. The corrugated metal siding worked well with the city’s blue-collar, mining-town mentality. Long gone were the days of the Palace Theatre, where marble columns stood high and the fittings in the main hall were trimmed with real gold.

The opening weekend of October 29, 1988 premiered with "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers", "Bat 21", "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark", "Alien Nation", "Gorillas in the Mist", and "Moon Over Parador".

It was later taken over by Laskeshore Theatre, and by 2016 was operated by Imagine Cinemas.

As an eight year old, the opening of the Cinema Six in 1988 was a mind-blowing experience. Six movies? No longer confined to only two choices? Perfect! The first film I ever saw there was “Ernest Saves Christmas”, and for some reason my memory played a trick on me, thinking that was the opening weekend. After some research, a friend at the Timmins Public Library found the opening weekend’s Daily Press advertisement, which showed the films premiering that weekend.

More babbling about the Cinema Six, which is no longer owned by Stinson, but Lakeshore Cinemas.
