The Plaza Theater was opened on December 19, 1910. Aside from movies, this theater was a major outlet for live entertainment. Aside from Main Street, it was one of the last stages for vaudeville.
The Plaza Theater also catered heavily to African-American audiences, through both it’s movies and live entertainment. (The Theater Guide listed it as a “Negro theater”).
It is said that Sammy Davis, Jr. performed here when he was five. The Micheals family ran the theater for most of its history, which ended in 1962. Stage shows ran through the 1950’s. The theater was razed in 1975.
