I remember my uncle taking my brother and I to see “Rocky 2” at this theatre in Cinema 2 back in 1979. Sadly, it would be the only movie that I got to see at this theatre before it’s closing since my grandparents didn’t go to movies very often. My grandparents form of entertainment was either a RCA 25 inch colour console TV that picked up three TV stations out of the Charlotte market, and two TV stations out of the Asheville, Greenville-Spartanburg market, pa paw’s music room downstairs, or going to gigs that my pa paw’s band was booked to play at.
Seating Capacity: 450
Opened as a twin cinema under Stewart & Everett in 1974. By the mid-1980’s it expanded its operations from two to four screens when Carmike Cinemas took over all of the Stewart & Everett chains in the Carolinas. Carmike operated this theatre as the Carmike Cinema 4 until its closing in 2005 when Carmike built a newer, flashier state-of-the-art 10 screen multiplex on the opposite end of Shelby’s Cleveland Mall that opened later that year.
This theatre was closed by Carmike Cinemas in 2005. The Carmike Cinema 10 at Cleveland Mall replaced it.
It was known as the Cinema 1 & 2 that opened in 1974 under Charlotte-based Stewart and Everett Theatres. Stewart and Everett operated it until 1986 when Carmike Cinemas took over this theatre. It was under Carmike Cinemas that this theatre expanded from two to four screens until its closing by Carmike in the early 2000’s.
Anyone know when this closed?
It is a Carmike cinema no wonder.
The price is now $399,500.
If I won the lottery, I would buy it and turn it into a anime-con Called Carolina-Con.
