Hoosier Theater

The building which houses the Hoosier Theatre was originally built in 1837 as a warehouse. It stands not far from the Ohio River, overlooking Kentucky. Throughout the remainder of the 19th and into the 20th centuries it served a variety of other purposes, including a saddlery, a post office, tavern and newspaper offices.

In 1926, the building was converted into a movie theater, and remained so until closing in 1955. It remained vacant for nearly 30 years, until the Historic Vevay, Inc., non-profit group purchased and began to restore the building in 1983. The Hoosier Theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Hoosier Theater reopened in 1987 with live theatrical performances, and continues to operate in this use today.
