The Murray Theatre was a single screen, second run house located on Murray Street, just off Lyell Avenue in Rochester. By 1930 it had closed and operator Daniel Egan was hoping to convert the building into a miniature golf course, but the Depression put paid to that idea. It later reopened again as a movie theatre. The shoebox design had a stage and curtain but no proscenium or depth to the stage and had a balcony. The marquee, as I remember, was plain with red and blue neon lettering spelling the theatre name. Possibly not the original, as it was plain and not at all ornate.
The Murray Theatre closed in 1952 but briefly reopened February 27, 1954 with Guy Madison in “Red Snow” & “Pathfinder”, but closed finally just a while later. It took on a new life as a furniture store for several years. It is currently used as a church.

Is there anyone who can offer further information or possibly a photo of the Murray Theatre?
I don’t recall a Wurlitzer theatre organ in the Murray Theatre during the 1940s. Could it have been removed from the theatre prior to this period? I remember an upright piano,to the left side of the stage. Circa 1944.

Are there any photos of the Murray,when it was a theatre?
The Murray Theatre reopened briefly on February 27, 1954 with “Red Snow” and “Pathfinder” only to close again in 1954.
