- Sep 28, 2012 — Famed Nishat Cinema destroyed by mob
The Nishat Cinema opened on December 25, 1947 and initially screened movies in the Urdu-language. Seating is provided in stalls and circle levels. From 1972 the cinema was renovated and CinemaScope was installed and it began screening English language films, the first being "Samson and Delilah".
The Nishat Cinema closed in July 2004 and the owners put forward plans to demolish it and build a shopping plaza, however, it re-opened. It is located next to the Universe Cineplex and is the most popular cinema in the city with genuine movie-goers. The sound and projection are next to none.
Sadly, the Nishat Cinema (together with another city centre cinema) was destroyed by a mob who set fire to the building on 21st September 2012, protesting against an American made film which was claimed to insult Islam.

Nishat is one of the oldest and the finest theatres of karachi still running the best of the lot. Currently Indian flick “Race” is drawing huge crowds.
