Guyan Theatre exterior

The Guyan Theatre opened on April 1, 1950. The facade was decorated in two types of marble facing. There was a centrally place vertical name sign and a V shaped marquee. The semi-circular lobby had a cove around the ceiling edges which containted concealed lighting.

Inside the auditorium, seating was provided in orchestra and balcony levels. Lavish large murals on the sidewalls were the work of interior decorator Hanns R. Teichert Co., and depicted local Indian lore, industry and the Hatfield-McCoy fued. They were illuminated by fluorescent black light.

The Guyan Theatre was demolished and replaced by a parking garage.

An article abut the Guyan Theatre appeared in the December 2, 1950, issue of Boxoffice. There are several photos. The decoration was by Hanns Teichert Studios. The Art Moderne design was by Alex B. Mahood, a Beaux-Arts-trained architect from Bluefield, West Virginia.

Eleanor Parker was elegant too. Have not seen Caged. Check out Eye of the Cat staring Eleanor. Wow.
