The Lansing Mall Theater was opened by ABC Theatres on June 25, 1969, as a free-standing, contemporary building on Mall Drive near the original west end of the mall. Throughout its life, it remained a single screen theater with a good-sized auditorium and was fairly typical of cimemas built near suburban shopping malls in the late-1960’s-1970’s before multiplexes became commonplace. It had a waterfall curtain. I remember seeing “Jaws” and “E.T.” there.
It was demolished in 1986 when the mall was expanded at both its north and west points.
This theater should not be confused with the current Lansing Mall 6, which was originally built by General Cinema and opened as the Lansing Mall West prior to the closing of the Lansing Mall Theater. The Lansing Mall 6 is on the other side of Mall Drive to the west of where the Lansing Mall Theater was located.

Here is a link to my site on Lansing Theatres: http://lostlansing.com/theatres.asp
I remember seeing “Chariots of the Gods?” at the Lansing Mall with my dad in 1973 (when I was 11), as well as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” twice (once in December 1977 and again in March 1978). (In June 1978 I moved to Illinois with my family.)
And yes, the Lansing Mall Theater did have a gold waterfall curtain.
By the way: ABC Theaters (a division of the network) owned the Lansing Mall Theater from its opening in 1970 until around late 1975, when ABC sold off its theater division to Plitt Theaters. Plitt then owned and operated the Lansing Mall until its closing. (When Plitt closed the Lansing Mall Theater in 1986, they had just merged with Cineplex Odeon Theaters.)
This was opened on June 25th, 1969. Its grand opening ad can be found in the photo section.
I am amazed when local theaters such as this- that were around for decades - only get 4 comments!
