Clock Tower Cinema

This cinema was located in the former London South West Railway building across from the street clock tower. Around the corner was the Gaiety Theatre and just yards away, the future pre-WW2 ABC Forum would make its debut.

Managed by father and son from 23rd February 1920 until closing in 1923, the Young family often rented the property out for private screenings.

The auditorium layout was somewhat different to other places; like an irregular triangle with the screen at the apex end, thus making the rear much wider. The cinema also boasted easy-to-clean plastic seats and, at closing, sold its twin projectors to another cinema known as the Northam Picturedome.

This popular city cross-roads site now houses the Lloyds Bank which is smartly finished, like all of the High Street buildings, in white Portland stone.
