News About This Theater

TIME (SUPERBA) Theatre; Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Opened in 1911 as the Superba Theater, it was soon renamed Rex Theater on August 3, 1911. The theater closed in early-June 1939. A few weeks later, the newly renovated Time Theater opened June 30, 1939. The front of the building was redone, air conditioning was installed, along with new sound equipment. At that time, the theater was owned by the General Theater Company of Oshkosh, an affiliate with Marcus-Virnoff Company. The first movie shown at the Time Theater was John Wayne in “Stagecoach”. On December 19, 1980 it became a twin screen theater.

Since 2007, it has operated as the Time Community Theater, and has occasional use as a live theater.

This theatre operated as a 2nd run theatre in its final years. It was closed by the Marcus Corp in Oct, 1991. A local childrens theatre used the building for a few years, it has sat vacant for a long time. It lacks anything art deco, basically just a big box. The 2nd screen was located upstairs in the former balcony. As previously stated above, a group is looking to convert this space into a live show house.

Smoke damage was reported at the TIME on March 3, 1958, originating from a major electrical fire at adjacent stores. Six of Oshkosh’s seven fire companies were needed to save the theatre.

It’s original name was the SUPERBA Theatre and was still under that name until at least mid-June of 1911, according to local newspapersm and probably a bit later as well.

The Time Theatre was in part-time operation earlier this year, with events on Fridays and Saturdays, including some movies. The last event was held on October 20, and the Calender of Events on the theater’s web site currently shows only board meetings scheduled, but perhaps there will be more events next year.

The web site’s photo gallery has an album of historical photos, including several showing the Rex Theatre. There is also an album showing the renovation work, and three albums with photos from live events that have since been presented in the theater.

The Time Community Theatre’s web site has been reconfigured and our link is dead. This URL works.

The web site appears to be infrequently updated, and lists no events. People looking for event scheduling would do better to check the theater’s Facebook page.
