Although church-like in appearance, this beautiful building has always served as a concert hall. (Now with classic silent movies). It was constructed in 1909 to house the huge instrument known as the Great Boston Music Hall Organ. The big Walcker concert organ, imported from Germany, graced the stage of the Boston Music Hall (forerunner of today’s Orpheum Theatre in downtown Boston). Architect Henry Vaughan designed the building, first known as Serlo Hall.
In 1931, the building was acquired by Ernest Skinner of the Skinner Organ Company, and when that company became Aeolian-Skinner, the organ was completely rebuilt and returned to service in 1947, a year after the building had been renamed Methuen Memorial Music Hall.
The Hall today is a busy concert venue which also presents classic silent movie programs, with, of course, live organ accompaniment.

The Walcker organ was installed in the Boston Music Hall in 1863 and removed in 1884 because it was taking up too much room on stage. It was placed in storage by 2 subsequent owners until it was finally installed in Serlo Hall in 1909.
The Hall celebrated its 100th birthday last month. There were concerts and a banquet during the period Sept. 25,26,27.
There will be an Open House at the Hall on Friday Dec. 3rd, 7Pm.
How often are movies shown here? I looked at the website but didn’t see any listed for this year.
Movies, with live organ background, were shown here 3,4,5 times per season, and always listed in advance on the website. Until now, ominously.
