This opened on March 29th, 1996. AMC Colonial 18 opening · Fri, Mar 29, 1996 – 125 · The Atlanta Constitution (Atlanta, Georgia) · Newspapers.com
i posted this in the comments on the other lawrenceville theatre page, but i’ll do it here also. I’m sure people remember an old movie theatre that was where Phoenix High School is now at. I saw True Lies there a while back. Its not listed on this site. It sure wasn’t too long ago that it was still in business. Phoenix High was built in 97, so i assume this place closed down in late 95 or sometime in 96. I remember the parking lot was very big and you had to park all the way down to the end of the parking lot because thats where the theatre was located. I looked all over the net and can’t find anytime about this place. Its as if it never existed.
This reply is to Mike Rogers post above. The list that you listed brought back memories. I worked at this place around 2001 and i remember all those movies, including the trailers of those movies. We enter the auditoriums 10 minutes before each movies ended to clean up. Trust me, we heard and seen the last 10 minutes of every movie so much that we started to reenact every single last 10 minutes of every movie. Good times.
The mall cinemas, both inside and outside, were still there in 1996. But they were both in pretty dire shape. When the brand new Colonial opened, with its better sound and stadium seating, it became worth the 45-minute drive.
Heck, as the movie critic for The Red & Black, I could go to the mall theaters for free and still chose to make the drive.

I guess by 1996,joshmassey, the GEORGIA SQ.MALL CINEMAS were either gone or getting ready to shut down. When I was there in the early 80’s we booked the best late shows for the UGA students,so Athens did even back in the 80’s have decent bookings.
Here a aerial view.

Yep, I was at UGA in ‘96 and it immediately became a destination for Athens moviegoers despite being 40 minutes away. Athens theaters stunk at the time, though there are a few good ones now.
Opened in 1996 in case anyone was wondering. I worked there in 1997 so I know …
The Concession Stand for your refreshments.
