The last showtimes for the Paramount was on July 13th, 1961.
Grand opening ad posted. Public opening: October 4th, 1930.
Closed 1961 and demolished 1962.
I helped my 90+ year old neighbor, E.H. Kilbourne, remove some personal memorabilia, gold leaf, sconces, etc when the theater was torn down in 1962 or maybe 1963. Fascinating experience. I am presently finishing writing a book of the experience – including the ghosts, fifth column spy and all. Title is “The Trapdoor Murder” and is based on the unsolved 1940 murder.
Photographs of the Paramount lobby murals appear in the 2014-Third Quarter issue of the THS journal, Marquee. This issue devoted to muralist Louis F. Grell.
My great-grandfather, Paul F. Nachtigall, was the sculptor who created and carved the molds for the bas-releif plasterwork inside the Emboyd (Embassy Theatre) and the Paramount in Fort Wayne. I have an article about him that mentions that the Fort Wayne News Sentinel published a special section about the Paramount when it opened on October 3, 1930. If they have an archive, you may be able to find additional information about the Paramount there.
Here’s some more info, and photos.
I remember going to this Pizza and Pipes once when I was really little. I loved it, but it burned down only a few months after I went there.
