As a Poway native growing up in the 90s and born in the early 80s I remember this place fondly. It was double feature $1 theater. So u could really do big things during the summer when everyone’s parents worked. It was also the only theater that was in Poway at that time. The first theater that out it out of business was the Edwards cinema that was built off Poway and community (now AMC). Many kids went here and so did families. It was only two screens, and the selection of candy was minimum and only one game (I can’t remember what it was)

According to one source the Poway Playhouse was the first movie theater in the area located in the Carriage Center. I’ve uploaded two current pictures: one from the back, the other at the Thrift Store entrance with the roof line of the auditorium readily visible.

Closed in the mid to late nineties as far as I can remember. Converted into a billiard hall and currently a thrift shop. I remember seeing movies like Mr Majestic, Live and Let Die, and Star Wars(second run after playing in the big San Diego theater…Valley Circle Theater?)

Here’s a cool newspaper clipping showing all the movies playing in the general area back in 1975.

Aside from the Vogue Theatre in Chula Vista, the Poway Playhouse was one of the last theatres to continually play double features in the county. It was fun while it lasted.
