Smyrna Drive-In

The Fair Oaks Drive-In was opened prior to 1955, and was operated by Martin Theatres of Georgia. (Although located in Smyrna, it was listed as being in Marietta). Later renamed Smyrna Drive-In, it operated through the 1970’s. The Smyrna Drive-In was a single screen ozoner located off Atlanta Road, about half a mile north of the Belmont Hills shopping center and right behind Dobbins and Lockheed (which meant every so often the roar of jet plane engines would overpower the film soundtrack).

This drive-in showed a lot of monster fare. It was also the starting point of the Smyrna little league parade that rode down South Cobb Drive at the beginning of every baseball season.

Bulldozed in 1983, the drive-in site is now the home of the Smyrna GDOT.

@Mike Rivest: That ad could have been for the opening of the 1963 season, and not their first season. Drive-ins would frequently have Grand Opening ads every season when they reopened in the spring.

HistoricAerials.com shows the drive-in open at that location as early as 1955.

You may be right. Someone should check the AJC microfilms.
