Located in a Grade I Listed building, the Institute of Contemporary Arts was formed in 1947 and first established a Film Society here in the 1960’s. Some public performances were introduced from 1976.
The cinema underwent a restoration and re-opened on 7th January 1981 with seating provided for 208. A small Cinemathque opened in April 1981 which had a seating capacity of 50 movable chairs.
The Institute of Contemporary Arts remains one of London’s most important cinemas that screens out of the ordinary films. Commonly known as the ICA Cinema, seating is now provided for 185 in the main screen and 45 in the Cinemathque.
