Centre Mall Theatres

Known as the Centre Twin Cinemas when National General Theatres opened it as a twin on January 19, 1969 with Olivia Hussey in “Romeo and Juliet” and Keir Dullea in “2001:A Space Odyssey”.

In 1986, the twin added four more screens and became known as the Centre Mall Theatres from April 18, 1986. Two more screens were added on August 22, 1986.

The theatre closed October 21, 2001 and, in a trend that was once immensely popular around the United Kingdom, it became a bingo palace.

I miss this theatre. My friends and I used to go in and pay for one movie, and see two or three. Very easy to sneak around there. Maybe that is one reason it closed??? I feel bad now!!!

This theatre’s status should be changed to closed/demolished. It was torn down in the spring of 2006 to make way for a $100 million renovation of the Centre Mall properties.

This was the 2 screen theatre I saw the original STAR WARS at least 12 times or so in the summer of 1977.

The addition of the former Canadian Tire store on the west side of the original theatre added the extra 6 small screens.

It has been completely demolished now. Not any great loss as a historical building, but still fondly remembered by me at least.

I remember…ah, the good old days. I remember when the twin cinemas opened here—the first twin theaters in the city. They were call the Centre Twin Cinemas, and the auditoriums were named EAST and WEST (they faced south). They were run by NGC (National General Cinemas?). They were both great theaters, and pretty big. I remember skipping school to see “The Godfather” at a Wednesday matinee…too busy at night. And “Blazing Saddles” ran for over a year! Kids, them was the days when a movie didn’t open on two thousand screens across North America. Then “Jaws” came out the next year and changed all that! Right? I saw “Star Wars” there, too.

Saw a ton of movies at the Centre Mall, mostly in the 80s. A few standouts were The Big Chill (won passes for a preview screening), Psycho II, The Breakfast Club, Someone to Watch Over Me, The Last Temptation of Christ (with protesters out front), and sex, lies, and videotape (which I remember vividly was sold out on opening night).

Pretty sure as a kid in the 70s I saw Silver Streak and The China Syndrome there, too.

Great memories with dates, friends, and family.

I would kill for pictures of the old cinema. If anyone has any, or knows how to get some, message me through my website: jarrettmazzawriter.com. Please, please, please.
