Back in the summer 0f 2002, this theatre suffered a minor fire after hours. When informed of the fire, Interstate Theatre’s CEO commented “Why did they put it out?” Needless to say, the Stockyards 8 wasn’t exactly held in high regards during its' later years.
Grand opening ad posted.
Currently being demolished.
I saw this theater today and I took some pictures. It’s covered in graffiti and it’s surrounded by a fence. Sadly, it looks like the end is near for the building.
Eight $1 Theaters Stockyards Complex to Open Omaha World-Herald (NE) – Thursday, June 7, 1990
“Bands will play and searchlights will graze the skies over Omaha tonight when Cinemark USA opens an eight – screen, $1 movie house at 3205 L. St. near the stockyards.”
“Phil Zacheretti, promotions and marketing director for Cinemark USA, said the Dallas company owns more than 700 movie theaters nationwide.”
“Among the characteristics at the Movies 8 Stockyards, Zacheretti said, are: seats with extra leg room; aisle lighting; armrests with cup holders; a computerized ticket system; an art deco lobby; one theater with George Lucas' sophisticated stereo system called THX sound system.”
“Discount theaters run movies before they are put in video distribution, Zacheretti said. Some of the films may be only a few weeks from their original first runs at major chains. In the case of Omaha, the opening film menu includes ‘Driving Miss Daisy,’ ‘Joe Versus the Volcano’ and ‘Miami Blues.’”
I was glad to see this one go. Used to love to go there in the 90’s, usually to see really good movies for a 2nd time. But they really let it go downhill. The last times I was there it smelled like urine and was in very bad disrepair.

Another one gone.
Stockyard Movies 8 was closed on 2/26/10. The theatre will be razed and the lot utilized for commercial truck parking.
This theatre was originally a Cinemark and was later sold to Interstate Theatres (which merged with Starplex Cinemas). As the name implies, the theatre is located near a livestock processing center.
