The Empress Theatre was opened on August 5, 1911. Both the Empress Theatre and Capitol Theatre were badly damaged by fire on 25th March 1926. The Empress Theatre was repaired and reopened on August 23, 1926. In 1945 it was taken over by Odeon Theatres (Canada) Ltd. It was closed on January 26, 1961.

It now operates as part of the Capitol Theatres complex.
