So the Fox Drive-In opened in May 1953 and closed at the end of the 1982 season. It was the third drive-in to open in Anderson, with the other two, the Skyway and the Hi-Way 29, both opening in 1948.
Boxoffice, May 16, 1953: (under Theatre Openings) “Anderson, S.C. - The Fox Drive-In was opened recently by Preston Temple and Bill Sanders.”
Boxoffice, April 20, 1964: “J. M. Pruitt, who operates the Fox Drive-In, Anderson, S.C., has taken over the operation of the Hi-Way 29 Drive-In in the same town from Wilby-Kincey Theatres”
Boxoffice, Aug. 2, 1976: “Clyde Bolt, operator of the Viking and Fox Drive-In, Anderson, S.C., opened two new theatres here July 15. The duplex is called the Village 1 and 2 and is located in the shopping center by that name.”
Its opening date was not found yet, but opened in the early 1950s. The Fox Drive-In closed at the end of the 1982 season.
My Dad Preston Temple his partner Bill Sanders owned the theatre in 1956. My Dad would bring in Country Music entertainers from Nashville and The Grand Old Opry for shows on Sunday’s. My Dad made friends and formed lifelong friendships with the entertainers. They encouraged him to move to Nashville, TN to manage and promote many of them. The theatre was sold to Clyde Bolt and Dad, Mom and sister relocated to Nashville where I was born in 1959. 😊
Approx. location of this drive-in was just north of E. River St & Hanks Dr. Part of the outline is still there.
1956 it was owned by Sanders and Temple. In 1956 it parked 400 cars so no changes were made.
