The Metropole Cinema stood on the corner of Wellington Street and Robb Street.
In 1955, a famous political split occurred at the Metropole Cinema. A party congress of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) was held at the cinema. At that congress the PPP split, with one of its founders, Cheddi Jagan staying with the party and another founder, Forbes Burnham forming the Peoples National Congress (PNC). Each man later became president.
It operated until 7th September 2004, when it was destroyed by fire. The Metropole Cinema was built out of wood and at the time of the fire, was believed to be the oldest in the city. The fire began inside the cinema. Despite efforts of the firemen to contain the fire to the cinema, fire spread to and destroyed several other buildings. The cinema had become a venue of adult entertainment and was notorious for vagrants and petty criminals who loitered in its vicinity.
