The Capitol Theatre is still listed in the 1951 FDY, but does not appear in a 1954 Hammond area city directory. This house could have been another victim of the cost of converting theaters for wide-screen processes. Some elderly locals recall the Capitol being Whiting’s “cowboy” theater when they were young, according to this article about Whiting’s theaters from the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society.

Some original architectural details remain intact in the Capitol Theatre’s auditorium, mostly on the ceiling. The floor has been leveled. Three photos can be seen in this Facebook album by local firm Vavrek Architects.

Gayle Faulkner Kosalko’s brief history of Whiting’s theaters says that the Capitol Theatre opened in 1922. Owner A.J. Obreshk was already operating the Star Theatre, which he had opened around 1917.

The December 24, 1920, issue of Variety ran this notice:

“The A.J. Obreshk Theatre Co., of Whiting, Ind., has been incorporated in Indiana. Capital $100,000. Directors A.J. Obreshk, Alta Obreshk and Chris Petrof.”
