The Lamar Theatre was opened in 1940 and was operated by Moran & Lola McDonald. In 1949 they opened the Bayou Drive-In in Texas City. The Lamar Theatre was closed in 1957. It became a church in November 1958, and at last knowledge, the Lamar Theatre was the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church.

I grew up in La Marque and my dad had a used car business just a few blocks from the Lamar Theater. The memories I have of the Lamar was the price (9 cents for kids and 25 cents for adults). I remember seeing the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis comedies (Scared Stiff comes to mind) there as well as Abbott and Costello. They also ran serials there on Saturday morning. Stuff like “Superman”.
Another thing is that they has an upstairs balcony for “colored”
customers.

Long time between comments. I ran the projectors at the Lamar Theatre in the mid 50s. Got a job with Monsanto thru the theatre manager, and, best of all, I met my wife who sold tickets there.
The owner also had a drive-in theatre nearby, but I cannot remember the name.

I don’t think 1100 Delmar is the correct address for the old Lamar Theatre movie theater. That is the address of the old (now closed) Lamar Elementary School and the picture seems to be of the school auditorium.
I remember going to movies like “Gunfight at the O.K. Coral” at the Lamar in the 1950s. It was indeed segregated then. I remember its location as over by the railroad tracks, perhaps on Oak St.
