1948 Air Base Drive-In Article from the Florida Times Union

Opened September 4, 1948 with Bob Steele in “The Big Calibre”. It was still open in 1970, but had closed by 1971 and was demolished.

The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in, which was on the west side of US 17.

Went there. The drive way and original fence line is still there but now is a lumber company.

This drive-in is now U-Haul.

Boxoffice, Feb. 8, 1960: “Carlton J. Carter has taken over operation of the local Ribault and Air Base drive-ins, which have been operated for the past several months by Irving Sochin. The Air Base shortly will be leased to Ernie Nolan, former manager of the Fernandina drive-in, Carter stated.”

Placed its first ad on August 17th, 1948 and held its official opening on September 5th, 1948. Grand opening ad posted.

The drive-in appears intact and operational in a 1960 and 1963 aerial.

However, by 1971 the screen was gone and a new building appears on the northeast corner of the property. By 1980, a go-kart track had been constructed on the property with no trace of the drive-in remaining.
