Around 1975 Sophisticate’s X Adult News shut down their twin cinema auditoriums to make space for a maze of video booths. At that time the projectors and movie chairs were moved over to South Main Street in order to create a new single screen theatre called Downtown Cinema.

Downtown Cinema was built inside retail space formerly occupied by an upscale shoe store, and since the interior decor was quite plush, as much as possible of the original ornamentation was retained; bronze chandeliers, maple panel walls, and thick Oriental capeting.

The auditorium was fashioned in a “reverse” lay-out, meaning theatre seats faced entrance doors, and aisles ran along side walls. Projectors were located in auditorium rear.

Other nearby adult cinemas gave stiff competition to the Downtown Cinema, causing it to shutter in less than a year. The Downtown Cinema sat vacant only a couple months before the building was converted into a cocktail lounge. It was demolished in 2011.

Because this cinema only screened soft porn it went out of business quickly. I was never inside. Can’t be certain, but above shot appears too old to be that of the Downtown, but does look a lot like the bar Inn of Three Sisters.
