Sylvester Stallone’s 1982 crowd-pleaser “Rocky III” opened at the Bristol IV 40 years this weekend (May 28, 1982).
Featuring Talia Shire, Carl Weathers & the debut of Mr. T, the film opened at number one with $16 million and remained in the top ten through mid-August, finishing the year as the 4th highest-grossing film of 1982.
I saw it here, just as I had the previous two Rockys, with a full crowd that first weekend as a kid and loved it.
Michael Mann’s 1981 crime-noir debut “Thief” starring James Caan opened at the Bristol IV 40 years ago this weekend.
Slight Correction: Opened on Christmas Day, 1974. Grand opening ad posted.
This wasn’t a bad little theater in its day. I remember frequenting the place quite often as a kid throughout the ‘70s and '80s (used to meet my grandparents for Sunday brunch at the nearby Barclay Inn) but for the life of me the only two flicks I can remember seeing there are Rocky III and Spaceballs. Maybe the original Rocky in 1976. I do recall going back in the early '90s for The Dark Half with Timothy Hutton.
This place went to seed by the mid 80s but I do have fond memories of great double features back then including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom w/ Ghostbusters and Weird Science w/ Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Good times. I’ll always remember one of the screens, I think in cinema 3, had a two foot gash in the bottom right corner that always bugged the hell out of me.
