Fort Supply Opera House
Fort Supply,
OK
No one has favorited this theater yet
Built in 1871, this could very well have been Oklahoma’s first purpose built theatre structure. Housed in a two story wooden building, the front section held offices, and the auditorium was located in the rear section.
Due its extreme remote location, all stage shows surely must have been originally provided by young Cavalrymen stationed at the fort. No doubt it would be safe to say that on this remote post any form of entertainment was welcomed and greatly appreciated!
It has been rumored that after Fort Supply shut down in 1891, a private entrepreneur later used this facility to screen silent pictures. In 1907 the facility converted to use as an insane asylum, and its a good bet pictures were shown then.
Today only the rock floor and a brick chimney are all that remain to mark the lot where this former theatre stood.

Fort Supply Opera House looks as if it provided only a Sparton auditorium and stage, but the enjoyment it must have brought to those isolated soldiers must have brought more joy than those fancy, big city theatres. Here is an engraved image of Fort Supply Opera House,
