Scala Cinema

The Scala Cinema was designed by German architect Rudolf Frankel and has a total seating capacity of 860-seats in stalls and balcony levels. It was opened on 2nd December 1935, and offered top Hollywood & Continental European movies at bargain prices. In 1951 it was renamed Republica Cinema when it was taken over by the Communist State. This lasted until 9th February 1967 when it was taken back by a private operators and regained its original Scala Cinema name.

Located 30 metres from the Patria Cinema, the exterior is a little shabby, but inside there are marble walls and Western style comfort. It was closed in 2016 and the building was put up ‘For Sale’. It remains vacant in 2024.

Despite the camera data showing May 2010, my photographs were taken in May 2013. The cinema entrance is now somewhat hidden away, but inside the ‘stalls and circle’ auditorium remains very spacious.

This cinema is now closed. Not sure when but it was before August 2017.
