Opened as the Nyack Cinema on August 30, 1972. Later renamed Cinema East, a single-screen cinema with (at the time) the largest screen in Rockland County. The last films to show under that name were “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (which showed every Saturday at midnight) and “Mission: Impossible”.
It closed in 1996, and was converted into the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center. It later changed its name to the Helen Hayes Theatre Company, and in October 2006 changed its name again, to Riverspace Arts in Nyack.
Along with many musicals and other dramatic productions, the theatre also still occasionally plays films.

The theatre’s actual name is The Riverspace Arts Center. The original curtain and huge screen was removed to make room for the stage and lighting equipment. They still run 35mm movies on a regular basis on a large roll down screen.
The theatre was heavily damaged in a flood in June 2011, and reportedly will not be re-opening.
This opened as Nyack Cinema on August 30th, 1972. Its grand opening ad can be found in the photo section for this cinema.
Theatre has been closed for over 10 years. It’s been gutted and now it’s going to open as a independent supermarket. It should be listed as closed as a movie theater
