This four-plex was located in a small open-air mall on the edge of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. It opened on May 23, 1975 as part of a redevelopment project. It closed on April 7, 2000 and was torn down for the same reasons, leaving the campus and downtown Madison area with no first-run movie theatres.

Very sad day when I heard this theater was going away. It was a great place to catch a movie downtown without having to go out to either the far west side or far east side to catch a first-run movie. However, isn’t the Orpheum on State St. still doing first-run movies? The college campus needs a movie theater like this again, more entertainment options for the college students that don’t involve going to bars!
Yes, the Orpheum is still showing first-run movies on State Street. :) But unlike the late, lamented University Square, they won’t cook you a cheeseburger and provide a table at your seat in the auditorium …
The University Square 4 Opened On May 23, 1975. Carmike Took Over The Theater In 1992 And Operated Until Its Closure For The Final Time On April 7, 2000.
Grand opening ad posted.
