The Gala Theatre was situated in the Mongkok district on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. It was built on the site of the Sun Wah Theatre opened in 1940. The Chinese name of Gala was the same as Sun Wah. It opened to business on 26th March, 1959 with Leslie Caron in “Gigi”.
It was a luxurious theatre and was the first one in Hong Kong to have escalators linking the lobby on the ground floor with the auditorium on the first floor. There was a cafe on the ground floor of the theatre building.
Before its closure on 16th February 1979, it showed first run English language films except in 1977, when it showed first run Mandarin language films. Its last film was an adult movie. A commerical building was built on the site of the theatre.

The Gala Theatre was managed and built by Shaw and Sons Limited.
The anniversary celebrations of the Republic of China were held at the theatre from 1972 to 1978.

I thought the Gala Theatre was located on the east side of Nathan Road, more towards Lai Chi Kwok Road.
