Elroy Theatre

Replacing an earlier Elroy Theatre (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The New Elroy Theatre was opened on December 22, 1937 with Pat O'Brien in “Submarine D-1”. The Elroy Theatre is the only remaining movie house in Juneau County, WI, since the closing of the Gail Theatre in Mauston in the early-1980’s. The Elroy Theatre remains as a first-run theatre.

This coming attractions poster is being advertised on eBay for $95. They didn’t present it very well, considering how much they want for it:

That’s about what it’s worth.

The Elroy Theatre opened in December 1937 and continues to show first run movies today. It was purchased by new owners in recent years who have spent much time and money rennovating and updating the place. I have friends in Elroy who tell me that the theatre does good business, which is not suprising considering the nearest theatres (all multiplexes) are at least 25 miles away.

The theatre’s website is http://elroytheatre.elroychamber.com/history.html

Oops… the correct link for the theatre is

The one I provided above is for the site’s “History” section.

At its opening, the Elroy was called the New Elroy theater, according to Boxoffice magazine. Perhaps there was a predecessor.

Was there over Memorial Day, and there was a sign saying the theater opens in June. Not sure when the season closes. Please adjust the streetview so it isn’t just a picture of a truck.

Apparently, there was another theatre before this one. The man who opened Mauston’s Gail Theater in 1930 (Mr. Suszyicki) also took over Elroy’s Majestic Theatre in Nov. 1933. I don’t have any other info.

Opened with “Submarine D-I” (unknown if any short subjects were included). It was first operated by Gerald G. Waller.

This replaced an older Elroy Theatre (formerly the Majestic Theatre) which closed three days prior (which will have its own page soon).
