PHOTO OF BUZZARDS BAY THEATRE IN 1950 MGM REPORT Thanks to Theatre Historical Society of America.
This weblog post from MassHistory has several photos of the Buzzards Bay Theatre, including an early postcard that appears to be from the 1930s.
The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Buzzards Bay Theatre. Located on Main St., 693 seats, Excellent condition. It says it was built about 1938. There is an exterior photo taken in July 1950.
According to this very short article(which includes photos), it was demolished in mid-November 2009. They didn’t even save the old Chevrolet sign or concrete relief Buzzards Bay Garage sign. Depressing.

So is it still there?
As of this past Sunday, it’s still standing. The lobby is being used for storage (possibly the auditoriums as well). There is a for lease sign on the building – commercial/subdividable.
The Quincy Patriot Ledger had a short item yesterday about the application for a permit to demolish. It says that the Buzzards Bay Theater dates from the 1920s, was closed as a Hoyts Cinema in 2001, and that a new operator, Jeff Avery, spent $165,000 in improvements in 2006-07 in an ill-fated attempt to reestablish it as a cinema. The news item says that the owners want to put a parking lot on the site. The theater has been closed for well over a year now.
Another one bites the dust. How sad.

The owner has a hearing on June 9th with the towns Historical Commission for a permit to demolish.

Has anyone seen this venue lately? Might it be possible that the closing in October 2007 was a seasonal thing, given the area’s tourist orientation? I’d hate to think that all the time, effort, and money was for naught…
This theatre closed down in October 2007.
Correction to the posting above of March 6th- the operator of the Buzzards Bay Theatre in 1942 was “Cape Theatres” / Clarence Robbins. The odd thing is that in order to be listed in the Motion Picture Almanac at that time, a theatre circuit needed to have a minimum of 5 theatres. Cape Theatres had only one theatre, the Buzzards Bay, yet it managed to get itself listed.
I saw a movie there today. It’s really great to see this up and running!
The theatre reopened yesterday. A friend of mine went to the grand opening. The website is http://buzzardsbaytheater.com/ . At the moment it looks like they are using only one screen.
In the 1942-43 Motion Picture Almanac, the Buzzards Bay Theatre is listed as being operated by Buzzard Bay Theatres/ Clarence Robbins.

I have volunteered and worked on many projects in the Town of Bourne for many years, none of them as community minded as this one. The Buzzards Bay Theater will open again, but not without the support of its community.
Growing up in Bourne I always had the Buzzards Bay Theater to go to with family and friends. All my children grew up with this opportunity also. Over the past few years we as a community have not been so fortunate. But now we can again enjoy this type of entertainment. Jeff Avery and his family have been working hard to re-open this Main Street icon for all to enjoy.
Mr. Avery has over-come most all the obstacles in the way of a grand opening but for the seats. When he began this journey the seats removed when Hoytâ€\s left were still available for him to bring back, but because of needed repairs and upgrades at that time they could not be brought back until those things were done. This took time and more funding then anticipated. That time proved to become a loss-the seats were sold. With little time to waste, more seats have been found. This is how I am involved; 620 of them are available at a cost of $25.00 each

I was in Buzzards Bay on September 12 and took some pictures of the exterior. The theater didn’t look like it was being renovated but there was some activity inside. I’m glad to hear it is being brought back to life. I went to this theater several times in the ‘50s when my family was vacationing in Wareham. Thanks and good luck, Jeff.
