Lake Cinema

Since it was opened October 12, 1947, the Lake Cinema in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin had been the home of first-run and art house films until its closure in 2000. According to the Green Bay News-Chronicle, the theater was sold for $121,000 by former owner Gary Goebel and may be used for the bank branch’s future expansion.

The Lake Cinema, one of the last Quonset Hut-style theaters left in the country, was torn down in November 2001 following its sale to a neighboring bank. Its foundation has now been filled in with grass where once the most popular entertainment venue in the area had stood.

How sad that a movie theater can not survive in such a major tourism area. It seems that the land the auditorium was on was to valuable to use as a movie theater. How unfortunate, and perhaps financially short-sighted.

This site notes that the original owners of the Lake were the brothers Orville and Elton Voeks.
