Cinelandia Bioscoop

Located in the Punda district. The Cinelanda Bioscoop was opened on January 16, 1941. It had 900-seats. It was such a success that it was expanded to 2,200-seats, with 1,600-seats in the orchestra level, many of them at the screen end not covered by a roof, and 600 seats in the balcony. Concerts and festivals were also held in the cinema. The Cinelandia was closed in 1986, a victim of the rise in video as a means of viewing films.

Since then, the building has deteriorated into a state of dereliction which is so bad that it could collapse and is too far gone to restore. It was granted a Listed building status on the Monuments Register in 2011. The owner wants to demolish it and build a shopping centre on the site, but has been blocked by legal proceedings. It still stands in 2024.
