Red Playhouse

The Red Theatre has stood in Shimentin, which used to be the downtown area of Taipei, for over 90 years. As a national monument, the Red Theatre is a very special octangle architecture designed by Kondo Shiro during the Japanese-occupied period.

Once a traditional market, a playhouse and a movie theatre, the Red Theatre received serious damage in a fire in 2000, and what we see today is the last main part of the original market. The theatre now is a multi-function playhouse and also a teahouse providing citizens a place to experience “old time” Taipei.
