Plaza Theater - November 2001

The Plaza Theatre was a small Art Deco style movie house in the center of Windsor. It opened December 2, 1939 with Laurence Olivier & Vivian Leigh in “Clouds Over Europe” and Edith Fellows in “Five Little Peppers”. Like many small town cinemas in the area, the construction of numerous multiplexes killed this once popular movie theater. The Plaza Theatre, and its ilk, are most likely down for the count. Renovation work began in October 2013.

I know it’s a long shot but I have grown up in Windsor also, and went to the theater a few times when I was very young! I would love to restore it and get it running again, showing movies at night and using it for guest lecturers and classes during the day to assist those looking for work to improve resumes and interview skills etc. If anyone knows of any way to get funding for such a project or would be interested in assisting or being a part of it, let me know! I would love to bring this great place back to life!

I haven’t found any recent news about the Plaza. Anyone know if the effort to restore it has gone anywhere?

It’s being revived. I think this article is the latest. http://patch.com/connecticut/windsor/new-restaurant-theater-revival-fuel-plaza-building-renovation

Frank, that article is from two years ago and it said the theatre would be open by the end of the year (2013) so I am guessing things have fallen apart.

Hi I lived in Windsor in 1964. I saw hrd Days Night Beatles at the Plaza. Shined shoes at barbour shop next to banks. played base ball behind band and climbe wall to retrieve the ball. Frank 6.16.51

I am trying to figure out how to rehab the movie marquee. it has been agreed that the PLAZA letters were red neon with black trim, but the neon borders on the front sides & underside remain a mystery. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks, Ray 860-752-5628
