I use to go to this theatre when it was just one screen. Later they converted it to two screens and only charged 99 cents to a see a movie.
The June 30, 1941, issue of The Film Daily said that the New Newington Theatre would be ready to open in early August. The original owner was named Fred Quatrano. The name New Newington was in use for this house at least as late as 1945, but I haven’t found any references to an earlier Newington Theatre.

I hated when they split this theater in half, it’s the only 1 screen old kind of theater I went to as a child, then when they split it in half and I went back I was wondering why they did it.
I used to go to this theater when I was a kid, with my grandmother who lived in New Britain. I remember seeing “Hello Dolly” there, and then “The Love Machine”,when I was a teenager.
I lived in the area around 1993-96, and I went there a few times when it was a bargain theatre. I saw “The Shadow” with Alec Baldwin and the Clint Eastwood movie where he played a secret service agent.
Nice little theatre, sorry that it is gone.

does anyone have any old pictures of this theater. I live across the street from the brooks where the theater used to be.
It was also the only place in town that had a Flying Buttress.
It’s a Brooks Pharmacy, Walgreens is going to be on the Berlin Turnpike where an old house used to stand. See how weird my town is?
Another memory from my childhood. I remember the fun I had in this theatre and I remember that it had a few little murals, it had a little blue clock near the exit door. When you came in, it had a red carpet and mirrors and I think it also had a balcony at one time. A very nice Greek couple owned it, I remember them, Demetrius and Paula Kounaris, they ran it with their sons and they had a lady named Mary there who worked the concession stand. Before Asia Grocery moved in, then out of the little store front. There was a comic book store called The Eye Opener there, it’s in Mazzocolli Plaza now, near Vitos Pizza and a barber shop occupied the other side. It’s still called Theatre Newington Plaza and don’t forget to pay a visit to Barb’s and Starbucks.
If the Kounaris kids had kept it as a theatre, it would have been a nice home for the local community theater in town.
Although I haven’t lived in Newington for almost 30 years, I grew up there and saw many films at the Newington Theater. It occupied valuable real estate, so I suppose it’s demolision shouldn’t be a surprise. Its decor wasn’t art deco; it was just typical 1940s style.
A Walgreens now stands in its place.
