The Lyric Theatre opened on September 1, 1923 with Wallace Beery in “Bavu”. It is located on Park Street in Hartford’s Frog Hollow section. By 1933 it was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. It has been closed since the 1970’s and is currently abandoned. The Lyric Theatre is one of many city theatres that have now been lost or forgotten and the building is owned by the city.
The Lyric Theatre was partially demolished in March 2010 when the auditorium section backing onto Broad Street came down.

Trying to expose the Lyric’s Story.
I work for the Hartford Public Library Park Branch in the Frog Hollow Neighborhood and am searching for any old photos or information on the history of the Lyric Theater. Does any one have any leads on historical facts about the Lyric?
Its scheduled to be demolished this weekend.

There is now a fund to help the City of Hartford preserve The Lyric Theater. It is an important landmark and would be a treasure to bring back to it’s former glory.
To donate to the fund: Donations should be made out to “City of Hartford,” with the memo line reading “Lyric Theater Fund,” and sent to 550 Main Street, Hartford, CT. 06103.

September 1 marks the 87th anniversary of the Lyric’s grand opening. An article published in the September 3, 1923 edition of the Hartford Courant, a few days after the opening, noted that Mayor Richard Kinsella, a host of other politicians, and a seven-piece orchestra had been on hand for the event. The fall, 2008, newsletter of the Hartford Preservation Alliance says that the Lyric Theatre was designed by architect Edward T. Wiley.
I used to go to the lyric all the time as a kid as my uncle joe Ruggerio was the manager. It was great!
