On May 25, 1980, the Augusta Drive-In became headlines after a 29-year-old Winthrop man was shot and wounded in a shooting incident involving a theater security officer, a man in his 70s from Farmingdale who at the time had worked at the theater for about a decade.

The victim’s 20-year-old girlfriend explained to authorities that the theater employee approached the car while the victim was finishing a sandwich to tell the couple that they had to leave. Maine State Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and ushered his girlfriend off for questioning. No charges were made, and the manager already went home just before the shooting happened.

It certainly looks like the old projection booth/concession stand is still standing.

E.M. Loew’s Augusta Drive-In Theatre launched in 1950. Its last listings are in 1980 likely indicating closure at the end of a 30-year lease (though not a guarantee).

Correction: This is now J & S Car Wash (the entrance) and J & S Oil gas station (the exit). A boat dealership sits in the back of what used to be the drive in. A more accurate address for this theater is 867 Western Ave. Manchester ME 04351. This points directly to the entrance.

Please update.

Almost positive that I saw Corvette Summer at this drive in with the second feature being Logan’s Run in 1978. My mother rented a cottage nearby during that summer. We both lived and still live in Rochester, NY. I have vague but precious memories of that summer.
