The Uptown Theatre was opened March 17, 1933 with Kate Smith in “Hello Everybody”. It was closed November 3, 1953 with Jeffrey Hunter in “Sailor of the King” & Dana Andrews in “While the City Sleeps”. It was converted into a Gambles chain store.

I updated Street View to the wrong block.
Are we sure the Uptown’s building has been demolished? The odd-numbered side of the 100 block of West Madison is almost solidly built up, and all the buildings look pretty old. I can’t imagine any of them having been built after 1950.
In photos is the March 17, 1933 Grand Opening ad of the Uptown Theatre with Kate Smith in “Hello, Everybody.” Earl and Inez VanHyning were in charge of the new Uptown. (The previous, short-lived Uptown was bought out by the Dickinson Circuit becoming the Plaza.)
Tim Holt visited the theatre in person on November 8, 1952. The Uptown closed on November 3, 1953 with “Sailor of the King” and “City That Never Sleeps. After closure, it was retrofitted for a Gambles chain store.
