Plantation Theatre Ad 1967

Opened January 29, 1965. Single screen theatre designed for roadshow engagements that rarely ever materialised. The ladies restrooms had sinks in each cubicle, a feature I have only since seen at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York.

The Plantation Theatre was part of a group of theatres built for ABC Florida State Theatres but opened by someone else until the Paramount Consent Decree competition demands could be met. A casualty of area over screening, the Plantation Theatre soon became a discount house.

I wonder if the Plantation is where I saw “Thunderball” on Christmas Day 1965 (it had just opened that week).

Search on the above address in Bing Maps or Google and see what looks like a theater on the west side of the road. Is that the original building?

ChasSmith, it was showing there then.

I doubt the building is still there.

I would doubt it too, and I don’t remember what this one looked like, but that one building looks like it might have started as a theater.

(I could be wrong about that. But at least I’m in the right place for the address. The Google map pin on this page is completely wrong. It’s the 3rd or 4th such error I’ve spotted in the past few days, and I’m not even looking for them.)

If I remember correctly, the parking lot entrance was right on 441 and the front looked a little like Loews Bay Harbor, which was built by the same original owner.

The Plantation Theater is still there. It’s connected to a larger, two-story glass building. I looked it up on Google Maps, and I recognized the front of the theater right away.

That’s a real time travel look back at Fort Lauderdale in 1965. Bob Freund. Woody Woodbury.

And what a year…My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music opening in Miami Beach…or just about to.

Take me back. Please.

Thank you, Tinseltoes!
