I went to one movie here, the re-release of American Graffiti around 1978.
I grew up in Cheesequake and would drive past the Amboy Cinemas to this theatre – was impressed with the varied and occasionally non-traditional films that ran there: Pennies from Heaven, Luna…the opening night of The Shining (with the original ending!) and Full Metal Jacket.
This opened on March 17th, 1976. Grand opening ad in the photo section.
I grew up in Woodbridge Twp. and spent countless hours in the Woodbridge Center Mall, but for the life of me, I can’t remember a movie theater or seeing a movie there.
If im not mistaken, the theatre lasted till 1980 or 81.
This theater had to be open in the late 1970’s, as I saw “The Big Fix” there in late 1978. That’s one of Richard Dreyfuss' less well known movies.
When this theatre was built in the mall in the mid 70’s, the floors were all wood. I bet that wouldn’t fly today. I can remember if someone with heels was in one theatre, you could here them walking in the other theatre.
I don’t think so. The Game Room Store was right up against the Anchor store which I think at the time was Ohrbachs. The theatre was a few doors in and it definitely became a steak house. I ate there many times after the closing of the movie theatre.
A theatre where a number of projectionists from my local worked. Each theatre seated 150 people. It actually became a Game Room store after closing.
It was then the Ohrbach’s wing of Woodbridge Center and I saw Midnight express (1978), Force 10 from Navarone (1978) and I believe either The Wind and the Lion or The Man Who Would Be King which would have been (1975). I believe after it closed it became a Rustler’s Steakhouse.
Actually this cinema was definitely open as early as 1976 because I remember seeing OBSESSION there. And it was so small that I remember the show being pretty packed with people, which meant there were probably about sixty of us in the whole place.
