Located in the Copacabana district of Rio. The Cine Roxy opened on 3rd September 1938, with Madeleine Carroll and Henry Fonda in “Blockade”. It was a very wide cinema, and had a single balcony.
In 1966, it was equipped to screen Cinerama (with a single strip, not the three strip system). The opening film was “Battle of the Bulge”, followed by “The Hallellujah Trail”, and in July 1968 “2001, A Space Odyssey”.
The Cine Roxy was later tripled, with the balcony extended forward to create a new main screen, and two smaller screens are located in the former orchestra level. It currently shows first run American movies as well as Brazilian films.

I saw “The Day After Tomorrow” at this theater in the summer of 2004. The theater is a few blocks from the beach and is very popular with the locals. The trick is to ask whether the American film being shown is dubbed or subtitled. If it’s dubbed in Portuguese, good luck.

It’s Portuguese, actually.
