Opened as an independent in around 1968, it was taken over by Loews around 1975 and renamed Loews Village Theater. This theater was located on the north side of Chagrin Boulevard at the western end of a strip mall located near the junction of Chagrin with I-271. It was of a simple, modern design. Its lobby was faux rustic in style; the auditorium was large, done in shades of brown and orange, with seats arranged in the “continental” style (i.e., no center aisle).

For about the first ten years of its life, this was a fairly prestigious first run house, in the era when Loews took over a number of former outlying neighborhood theaters in the greater Cleveland area suburbs. It was one of the few theaters that showed the Russian version of “War and Peace” on a two-part, reserved performance basis.

The theater closed in the late-1980’s or early-1990’s and may have been twined or otherwise multiplexed prior to closure. An Ethan Allen furniture store occupied the structure. By 2022 it was occupied by DXL Big + Tall.

It was the cleanest, best run theater in town. Shelly Silverman was the Manager. As an Usher, then Doorman I spent my time cleaning bathrooms and taking customers to their seats. I seem to remember that there were 910 seats.

I remember Lion In Winter playing here as a roadshow attraction. Was that its first booking?

DXL Big + Tall now occupies the former site of The Village Theater. Ethan Allen moved to Legacy Village in December 2013.
