The Grand Opera House was built by Jude and Clifford Churchill and was East Troy’s premiere showplace since before the Civil War. It hosted plays, dances, Mandolin Club concerts, traveling troupes (including the Tia DeVass Players), even basketball games, and later, films. The final graduation ceremony was held there in 1938, until its then-operator, a Mr. Macklin built and opened the new, modern Troy Theatre a few doors to the south shortly thereafter. The stage with its main drapery is still there, and the stage wall still bears the signatures of both local and visiting performers. In 1990, a renovation prominently honored the building’s history with a large sign.
