The Derrick Theater was the second motion picture theater built in Hobbs. It was built by Mrs. G.T. Scales of Lubbock and opened for business July, 18th, 1930. It opened with a silent film, Sir Rider Haggard’s “She” starring Betty Blythe. A live stage show, “Jazz Jubilee Frolics”, was offered as an added attraction. Admission was 15 and 40 cents. It had closed by 1941.

The Derrick Theater is also listed as ‘closed’ in the 1941 and 1943 editions of F.D.Y.
Hobbs Daily News-Sun, Sept. 30, 1951: “The second theater opening in Hobbs was the Derrick … early advertisements located it as "adjoining the federal postoffice building on East Carlsbad.” (Carlsbad is the former name of Broadway.)“ Its first movie was the 1925 silent film "She” starring Betty Blythe.
