The Milford Cinemas were acquired by Hoyts when that company bought Interstate Theater Corporation (in about 1985). I worked for both Interstate and Hoyts in the 1980s. This cinemas began as a single screen theatre with the original name of the State Theatre. This was because of the address “3 State Street” in Milford, MA. It was changed to the Milford Theatre after being acquired by Interstate. In approximately 1975 the theatre was divided into 2 theatres with the balcony offering one screen and the mezzanine offering the other. I remember when I visited the theatre in the early 1980s there was an issue with the sound from one cinema being present in the other. Hoyts resolved that issue after they acquired the theatre. The theatre remained operational through August 1991. (I departed Hoyts in 1989).
The State Theatre in Milford opened in 1927. Here is an item from the October 28 issue of Motion Picture News:
The 1927 Film Daily Yearbook lists 2 movie venues for Milford, the Ideal Th., 500 seats, open 6 days per week; and the Opera House, also with 500 seats, open 6 days/week.
In the 1942-43 Motion Picture Almanac, the State in Milford is listed as being run by Interstate Theatres of Boston. Interstate also ran the Opera House in Milford at that time.
The theatre was originally known as the State Theatre. I rember seeing my 1st film in this theatre and really wish it still existed. I would love to see interior photos. I remember that there was a large stair case going to the upper level and I kind of remember Boxes on the mezz level. I have an exterior photo which i would love to get posted here but I am not sure how.

This theatre was known as the Milford Twin I & II when it was owned by Interstate Theatres during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s before they were bought out by Hoyts. It was torn down in the mid 90’s for a new bank building.
