Star-Lite Drive-In Theatre, Winter Garden, Florida

The Star-Lite Drive-In was constructed on East Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida in 1949, and opened the same year. Malon O. Wright was the building contractor and built the screen tower of Art Deco style design. The tower was so 1950’s that many thought it must have been designed by the Studebaker automobile engineers! At its height, the Star-Lite Drive-In contained spaces for 400 cars. Thelbert Peavy managed the theatre for Collie Biggers, and by 1956 for Floyd Theatres for over 40 years. The Star-Lite Drive-In closed in 1996, and was demolished in 1998. On its site presently is a strip shopping center.

I remember my aunt down there told me that it was torn down as you said it’s now a strip mall, same thing as the campground I stayed (probably moved up to Florida State Route 27). When I was a kid, it was still standing.
