Royal Cine

Royal Cine dates from Christmas 1929, and was designed by architect Norte Junior. It had one room in “U” form, with 3 levels. Royal Cine was the first cinema in Lisbon having sound pictures, in 1930, “White Shadows in the South Seas” (by W.S. Van Dyke).

This cinema was built in order to amuse and entertain the workers from Bairro Estrela d'Ouro (Golden Star District), property of an important industrialist of that time.

In the 1980’s (around 1982), the Royal Cine was closed and adapted as a Pingo Doce supermarket in spite of being legally protected due to its proximity with that workers' district, which is an important memory of the industrial times.

Even so, Royal Cine still keeps its beautiful facade, and the lobby Art Nouveau with floral decoration, a clock and a big golden star.
